11 Revelations From Chatting With the Jonas Brothers: More From the Billboard Cover Story

The Jonas Brothers are back and arguably bigger than they’ve ever been, landing their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as on the Pop Songs chart — which they’ve now dominated for two weeks.

Though the success of their comeback gets broken down in Billboard’s latest cover story, there were several takeaways from the interview that didn’t make the final cut. Ahead of the Jonas Brothers’ first-ever Billboard Music Awards performance Wednesday (May 1), check out the many revelations Billboard had during our interview with the sibling trio:

Nick thinks their documentary will be meaningful for fans beyond just telling the brothers’ story.

The guys hadn’t watched the final cut of the documentary prior to our interview, but they’d seen enough to know that it would be impactful for anyone who watches. “People are going to most likely watch the movie and immediately call their family or friends that they feel like they haven’t been on the best terms with and mend those relationships, which is the ultimate goal,” Nick says. “For us, it’s not a story about our journey and our career, it’s about our family and who we are, and that it’s possible to go through something with somebody — family, friends, whatever — and come out on the other side stronger than before.”

Their happy album title is intentional.

“Being able to get up and do these shows, there’s a joy and a happiness that I feel — that I think we all feel — that we want to share with the world,” Nick says of the album title, Happiness Begins. “We said early on we’re trying to bottle up happiness, it’s our objective with the music we’re going to make and the story we’re going to tell, because the world needs that and we want to bring that to them.”

Joe feels similarly: “I like to hear what people are releasing every week, and I’m constantly skipping through songs that are sad. It’s everywhere you look right now — it’s on TV, Instagram. Obviously there’s things that need to be discussed that we’re passionate about and that we want to talk about, but at the same time we also just want to make people feel good and create a safe environment.”

They already have enough material for two albums.

With Happiness Begins arriving on June 7, fans have plenty to look forward to. But there’s apparently plenty more where that came from, as Nick casually hints that their reunion talks produced a lot of music: “There were conversations where I was saying, ‘It could be whatever you want it to be — just shows with the old music. Maybe we do a song.’ Eventually it warmed up to, we’re making an album, we’re making two albums.”

Diplo may have a hand in a song or two.

When Ryan Tedder was initially asked to write with Nick and Joe, he accidentally double-booked one day with Diplo in Malibu. Instead of rescheduling with one, he decided to make it a collaborative writing session. “We knocked out three songs that day, one of which turned into something that is presently coming that I’m not allowed to talk about just yet,” Ryan says.

Performing “When You Look Me in the Eyes” feels different this go-around.

At the Jonas Brothers’ Minneapolis show, Joe had a revelatory experience with the group’s power ballad, “When You Look Me in the Eyes.” “It forever was our serious song,” he says. “We spent countless hours working on harmonies, and now — Nick has this adlib at the top of the chorus that’s almost like a lyric for fans, and he just laughed. I’ve never seen him laugh at that song before, that was always like ‘This is our boy band moment.’ Now, it’s just a fun time.”

Danielle Jonas was part of the reason Kevin was so inspired to reunite with his brothers.

“After Nick floated the idea at Christmas, [Danielle] came to me and she was like, ‘Do you want to do this again?’ Kevin recalls. “I said, ‘If the opportunity lends, I would love to.’ She goes, ‘I hope you know you have my full support. I’m here with you, I know it’s going to be different with the kids, but we’ll figure it out.’”

Their family dynamic expands beyond their relationships with each other.

When the guys arrived in Minneapolis, they had just been with their band and crew less than 24 hours prior, as they took over popular Penn State bar Champs the night before. Even so, the guys hugged each member as if they hadn’t seen them in weeks. Plus, their management team features former bandmates Greg Garbowsky and John Taylor, and even those who no longer work with the brothers are still around: Former keyboardist Ryan Liestman and John Fields — who produced the Jonas Brothers’ last three albums — were at the after-show hang.

Kevin admitted he was rusty when he first got in the studio.

As the only member to not continue with music after the Jonas Brothers’ split in 2013, Kevin wasn’t immediately comfortable with the studio process. “It was weird, I’ll be honest,” he says. “They had been working in the studio for so long by themselves, and then coming in and doing it again, I kind of sat back and watched. Nick pulled me aside and was like, ‘There is no pressure, that’s the beauty of it.’ It was almost a reminder that we were working together in it too, and that was the moment for me [when I realized] this was just about figuring it out. If we don’t get this right, there’s too much pressure, it is what it is.”

Their first single was almost a song called “Rollercoaster.”

Tedder explained that when he first started working with the brothers, they told him about a song called “Rollercoaster” that defined what they wanted their next album to be lyrically and thematically. Little did they know, Tedder was a co-writer on the song. “I think that gave me a bit of a leg up in terms of taking on the whole project,” the producer says. “It was a complete serendipitous series of events.”

But while “Rollercoaster” was a special song to the JoBros, Joe says it might have been a little too real to release first. “The song is kind of the nostalgic play of things, like, ‘Take me back to when we were younger,'” he explains. “It’s definitely an important song for the album — or whatever album it makes. I can’t wait to sing it, it’s a belter.”

Haim was in on the Jonas Brothers reunion secret.

Joe says that there were thousands of people that knew they were reuniting before the brothers officially announced their return on Feb. 28, and it meant a lot to them that no one leaked the secret. Three of those thousands happened to be the members of Haim, who are seemingly Jonas stans. “I bumped into Haim at a party in Paris for a fashion show and they were like, ‘Is it true? You guys doing it again?’ and I was like [shrugs], and they were like ‘C’mon!,'” Joe recalls. “After a few drinks, I told them, and they were cool enough to keep it quiet. It makes us feel really good that people stuck on our side with this one.”

Their partners are just as into this comeback as any fan.

According to Kevin, Joe and Nick, none of their significant others were Jonas Brothers die-hards before meeting their beaus. But now that the self-proclaimed “J Sisters” are a part of this reunion, they’re almost more into it than the guys themselves. “They’re just as invested,” Kevin says. Joe’s fiancée, Sophie Turner, doesn’t know any of the original JoBros material, but “reminds me every day that ‘Year 3000’ was a Busted song first,” he laughs. As for Nick, any song he writes is special to his wife. “Priyanka told me, ‘You’re not always the best at expressing your feelings or emotions, but your songs are your love letters to me,'” he says. “I was like, ‘I’ll take that.'”

When I asked if the guys envisioned the Jonas Brothers still happening when they were all married men, Joe says they definitely saw it happening — and now, it’s better than they could’ve imagined. “We enjoy it more,” Joe says. “We get to celebrate this with three other people that love it just as much as we do.”

New Album ‘Happiness Begins’ Will Be Released on June 7th

Just a couple months after announcing their reunion, the Jonas Brothers are set to release their fifth studio album, Happiness Begins, on June 7th. This will be their first full-length LP since 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times.

The trio’s fifth LP comes on the heels of their first Number One single, “Sucker,” which was their first new song in six years. They followed “Sucker” with “Cool” earlier this month. “After seven years of not working together living life and finding ourselves in our own paths we came back to give you our journey in album form,” eldest brother Kevin Jonas wrote on Instagram. “I’m so excited for you to hear Happiness Begins out June 7th. I have to say out of all the albums we have done together I’m the most proud of this one. I wish I could hand it to you now but you will just have to wait a little bit longer.”

Ahead of the album’s release, the group will appear at both the Billboard Music Awards and Saturday Night Live. They’ll be the musical guest for the latter on May 11th, joining host Emma Thompson.

The Jonas Brothers released their first album, It’s About Time, on Columbia before moving to the Disney-owned Hollywood Records and beginning a career-expanding partnership with Disney. They released three platinum-selling albums during their initial run as a band, starred in two films (Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2) and had their own show, Jonas L.A.

In 2013, the band experienced a “deep rift,” as they described it at the time, while recording music for what would’ve been their fifth album at the time, the never-released V. In the time since, Nick Jonas has had success as a solo artist (“Jealous,” “Close”) and actor (Jumanji, Scream Queens) while Joe Jonas led the funk-pop DNCE over the last few years.

Moreover, the three brothers are saying they are “definitely” planning on going on tour this year, but are keeping the details a secret for now.

The Jonas Brothers Will Play “Saturday Night Live” With Host Emma Thompson

Saturday Night Live is on a musical hot streak. Just days after having BTS play an episode hosted by Emma Stone, SNL is bringing another boy band to its famed stage — the Jonas Brothers.

The recently reborn Jonas Brothers will play the May 11th show, hosted by actress Emma Thompson. The band shared the news on its Instagram with the iconic SNL corkboard announcing the matchup. “Save the date?” the account captioned, and yes, we will be marking that on our calendars ASAP.

This won’t be the first time the band of brothers has been a musical guest on the show. In 2009, Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Kevin Jonas performed “Video Girl” and “Tonight” as well as appeared in a sketch called the “Fourth Jonas” with host Alec Baldwin. Nick also performed in 2016 as a solo act.

This time around, it seems likely that they’ll perform their new singles, “Sucker” and “Cool,” although the possibility of even newer music is also on the horizon. Fingers crossed they’ll appear in some sketches on May 11, too, and that maybe, just maybe, we’ll get cameos from the Jonas Sisters. And here’s hoping now is the time we get a Camp Rock-themed bit, which the fans clearly want.

Nick Jonas Calls Wife Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner’s Friendship ‘a Dream’

A match made in sister-in-law heaven! Nick Jonas knows he lucked out when it came to his wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, fitting in with his famous brood — especially brother Joe Jonas’ fiancée, Sophie Turner.

“It’s a great feeling,” the UglyDolls star, 26, told Entertainment Tonight Opens a New Window. on Sunday, April 14, of the ease of blending the Quantico alum, 36, the Game of Thrones actress, 23, and Kevin Jonas’ wife, Danielle Jonas, into the family. “I mean, it’s kind of a dream where, as close as we are as brothers, that our wives and fiancée are so connected as well.”

As for the Jonas Brothers reuniting and making new music, Nick shared that it was “obviously a huge adjustment for everybody,” but that their significant others have been a pillar of strength for them.

“These incredible women have handled it so well and have been the best support system for each of us, individually and as a group,” he added. “To get to share that with them is a really amazing thing.”

The “Chains” crooner also revealed that as much as Chopra Jones fits into his family, the same goes for him meshing with hers. “It is one of the things we were so drawn to about each other,” Nick explained of their commitment to their families. “And the family’s just getting bigger and bigger, and that’s a beautiful thing. We love including our loved ones, our family, in everything we do… our house is for everyone, our doors are always open. That is, in my opinion, how it should be.”

Nick and the former Bollywood star tied the knot in December 2018, while Joe and Sophie — who got engaged in October 2017 — are set to wed this summer in France. Kevin, for his part, tied the knot with Danielle, 32, in December 2009 and share daughters Alena, 5, and Valentina, 2.

Earlier this month, Chopra Jonas, Turner and Danielle showed support for their beaus as they jetted off to Pennsylvania together where the Jonas Brothers were playing a concert. The ladies even poured drinks for concertgoers at a bar near Penn State.

See Jonas Brothers Debut ‘Cool’ Live at Surprise College Concert

Jonas Brothers surprised Penn State students with a live performance at the college’s local bar on Friday night.

Following an introduction from Penn State’s head football coach James Franklin, Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas – self-proclaimed Nittany Lions fans – delivered a five-song set at Champs, including the first live performance of their new single “Cool.”

The trio, who announced they were reuniting in late February, also played their recent single “Sucker,” as well as their 2007 hit “S.O.S.,” their 2008 hit “Burnin’ Up” and covers of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” and Busted’s “Year 3000.”Keeping with the college theme, the Jonas Brothers are also set to perform at NCAA’s Final Four Weekend festivities tonight at Minneapolis, Minnesota’s U.S. Bank Stadium.

Jonas Brothers shared their latest single “Cool” on Friday alongside an ’80s-inspired Miami music video.

In March, Jonas Brothers had a weeklong takeover of The Late Late Show With James Corden, which preceded the release of their first song in six years, “Sucker.” The band will also be the subject of an upcoming Amazon Studios documentary, which will be produced by Philymack and Federal Films, and is set to premiere on Amazon Prime.

Joe Jonas Surprises ‘Camp Rock’ Fans With Performance Of ‘Gotta Find You’ In Concert – Watch

The Jonas Brothers are back and releasing new music, but that doesn’t mean they can’t throw it back to old songs, too! The band tugged at our heartstrings and surprised fans at their March 30 Atlanta show, performing “Gotta Find You” from their 2008 Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock.

Fans, of course, still knew every word to the emotional song that came out over 10 years ago. In addition to “Gotta Find You,” the boys also sang “When You Look Me In The Eyes,” which was from their self-titled album released in Jan. 2008.

Their Atlanta show was the third they’ve done since reuniting in 2019 as a band – Kevin, 31, Joe, 29, and Nick, 26, performed pop-up fan shows in New York City and Los Angeles, as well. Hopefully, the boys will announce a tour soon in which they can play all the throwback songs as well as new music – they said in an interview after dropping new hit “Sucker” that they have around 40 songs they’ve created!

In case your DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) knowledge is a bit rusty: In the movie, Joe’s famous singer character, Shane Gray, sang “Gotta Find You,” as he searched for the mysterious and beautiful voice he overheard at music sleep-away camp, Camp Rock. He eventually discovered the voice belonged to Mitchie Torres (portrayed by Demi Lovato, 26), and the two finished out the movie with a heartwarming duet of “This Is Me” with Shane harmonizing with “Gotta Find You” as well.

All we need is for Demi to join the Jonas Brothers on their tour so she can perform the song with the brothers… and maybe 26-year-old Miley Cyruspopping in as Hannah Montana as well? That would just make all of our Disney Channel dreams come true.
